New York City: The Office of General Assembly of the United Nation has issued the following news release: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Patrick Carey of Ireland as his Deputy Chef de Cabinet ad interim. On Thursday 4 February, UCD hosted 'After Empire: Leaders' Discussion', bringing former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, former President of Tanzania, Benjamin Mkapa, and former Indian Minster of External Affairs, Salman Khurshid. Joined on stage by Professor Mary Daly, Dr Art Cosgrove and Dr Conor Mulvagh, the leaders discussed the commonalities and differences of experience emerging from the British Empire. (more…)

The Nutrition Team at the UCD Institute of Food & Health are seeking to recruit volunteers for a nutrition research study which will be completed at the Clinical Research Centre at St. Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin. I had spoken to you about this study last May and you were very helpful, however we are still recruiting for this study and finding it difficult to get people who meet the criteria. Celebrations are afoot at UCD after graduate Dr. Bernadette Brereton (BA, 1989) scooped a prestigious National Teaching Expert Award. With only seven awards presented across the country, it is a huge achievement for Bernadette who received the award for her work in delivering the Masters in Teaching and Learning (MALT) at Dundalk Institute of Technology. Bernadette and the MALT team also received a Special Commendation Award for their work in “effecting systemic cultural change in teaching and learning in their Institute”. (more…)

Financial specialist Owen Ross Whelan (B.Comm 1995) is trading up from figures to foot racing in April 2016 to raise funds for Veterans Aid. He's taking on the legendary 'Marathon des Sables' for the charity that has inspired him and is already in training for what has been described as “the toughest footrace on earth”. Participants in the grueling multi-day 'ultra-marathon' have to carry their own supplies and survival equipment across 156 miles of Africa's Sahara desert - where temperatures can soar to 50C. The six-stage challenge features a non-stop phase over 75 kilometers and is known for testing participants to their limits. (more…)

April 2015 was the starting point of a project to comprehensively review all UCD taught programmes, incorporating the vision for UCD graduates from the UCD Education Strategy.   This Curriculum Review and Enhancement Project adopts an outcomes-led programme approach and structure, informed by specific programme enhancement themes which are: a focus on research-informed and research-led education the development of discipline-specific as well as a wider set of attributes and capabilities an appraisal of assessment (methods and load) and the use of technology to enhance learning. From former UCD Business and Law graduates to Ink guys! After both Donal Ryan and Thomas Bullman graduated from UCD in 1999, they set about the usual route of working for large multi-national companies. However, some years later they decided to go into business for themselves and have just launched a new website called Madinks.ie.  The website offers customers a unique way of buying printer ink cartridges by simplifying the entire process.  To date they have won the Eircom Spider Awards for Best Digital Retail Excellence and also the Web Awards for Best e-Commerce Micro website.  (more…)
