Signatories revival at The Olympia Theatre Dublin

Having received its world premiere at Kilmainham Gaol for the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising, Signatories returns to the stage in October at The Olympia Theatre Dublin. Originally commissioned by UCD, this stunning list of writers, Emma Donoghue, Thomas Kilroy, Hugo Hamilton, Frank McGuinness, Rachel Fehily, Éilís Ní Dhuibne, Marina Carr and Joseph O’Connor present the seven signatories of the Irish Proclamation, along with the interesting perspective of Nurse Elizabeth O’Farrell, who delivered the surrender in the Easter Rising of 1916. Olympic Ad Astra Sports Scholars Achievements

Our 8 Ad Astra athletes participating in Rio 2016 Summer Olympics – representing about 10% of the Irish Olympic team – took the international stage by storm, and brought home Olympic silver for Ireland. We’re delighted Stage 4 Physiotherapy student and Ad Astra Sports Scholar Paul O’Donovan, along with his brother Gary secured Olympic silver in the Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls. Paul trained at the Ad Astra High Performance Gym over the past four years, while also skilfully managing his academic progress. Paul went on to secure gold at the World rowing championship. (more…)

University College Dublin holds alumni reception in New Delhi.

Saturday last, UCD held an Alumni reception in New Delhi, India to gather some of the 800 UCD alumni currently based in the country. UCD President, Professor Andrew J Deeks made his first official trip to India to attend the event, meet with alumni and to launch the UCD President's Global Fund - India. The evening was kindly hosted by current Ambassador of Ireland to India, H.E. Ambassador McElduff at his residence. Also at the event Dr Conor Mulvagh launched the recently published book 'Irish Days, Indian Memories' and UCD presented an honorary award to renowned social activist Dr. V. Mohini Giri. (more…)

UCD Institute of Food & Health are seeking to recruit volunteers

The Nutrition Team at the UCD Institute of Food & Health are seeking to recruit volunteers for a nutrition research study which will be completed at the Clinical Research Centre at St. Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin. I had spoken to you about this study last May and you were very helpful, however we are still recruiting for this study and finding it difficult to get people who meet the criteria. If you could circulate an email/include it in an email to be sent to Alumni network it would greatly increase our reach and help our recruitment efforts. We are currently recruiting individuals aged 40 - 65 years for a study investigating the effect of milk proteins on blood glucose control.…

Owen Ross Whelan (B.Comm 1995) tackles toughest footrace for veterans charity

Financial specialist Owen Ross Whelan (B.Comm 1995) is trading up from figures to foot racing in April 2016 to raise funds for Veterans Aid. He's taking on the legendary 'Marathon des Sables' for the charity that has inspired him and is already in training for what has been described as “the toughest footrace on earth”. (more…)

Curriculum Review and Enhancement Project Update

April 2015 was the starting point of a project to comprehensively review all UCD taught programmes, incorporating the vision for UCD graduates from the UCD Education Strategy. This Curriculum Review and Enhancement Project adopts an outcomes-led programme approach and structure, informed by specific programme enhancement themes which are: a focus on research-informed and research-led education the development of discipline-specific as well as a wider set of attributes and capabilities an appraisal of assessment (methods and load) and the use of technology to enhance learning. John O’Doherty receives the Sir John Hammond Award

British Society of Animal Science honour School of Agriculture and Food Science Professor with prestigious Award. The British Society of Animal Science have awarded UCD alumnus, Professor John O'Doherty, UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science's Professor of Animal Nutrition, the Sir John Hammond Memorial Prize at their annual Conference Dinner at Chester University on Wednesday 6th April 2016. This prestigious Prize is awarded by the Society to anyone in research, teaching, advisory, farming or affiliated professions who has made a significant contribution to the science or development of animal production. Science alumnus Alan Smeaton awarded RIA Gold Medal in Engineering Science

The Gold Medals from the Royal Irish Academy are sponsored by the Higher Education Authority and awarded to individuals who have made a demonstrable and internationally recognised, outstanding scholarly contribution in their fields. The medals were presented by Robert-Jan Smits, Director-General of Research and Innovation with the European Commission who said that 'each of these awardees have demonstrated through their outstanding contributions to academia and the impact of their research the intersection of research, scholarship and 'real world' application.
