UCD alumnus and author Stephen P. O’Connor publishes new novel

Stephen P. O'Connor is a native of Lowell, Massachusetts, where much of his writing is set. He is the author of Smokestack Lightning, a collection of short stories, and the novels The Spy in the City of Books and The Witch at Rivermouth. O'Connor has worked as a roofer, a garbage collector, a harvester of grapes, a drywall man, a shoe salesman, a factory hand, and for more than twenty years, a high school teacher. He earned a master's degrees from University College Dublin and UMass Boston, and has lived and worked in Ireland and in France. O'Connor lives with his wife, Olga, and their two children in Lowell. Congratulations to UCD alumna Annie Atkins

Annie Atkins MA, was the lead graphic designer on Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel which picked up the Oscar for Best Production Design. Annie is a Dublin-based designer "I specialise in graphics for filmmaking. As well as creating contemporary artwork for movie posters, I also make any graphic pieces outlined by a period film script - like prison escape maps and telegrams to help create Wes Anderson's fictional State of Zubrowka; or neon shopfront signs and fake passports for Spielberg's new Cold War spy thriller". UCD Alumnus publishes first piece of commercial fiction

A new thriller by UCD graduate Brian Charleton has been published by A-argus books, an American publisher.  It is a fast-paced witty plot with scintillating dialogue and an uplifting subplot and is available from Amazon.com as a paperback and as an e-book. Brian Charleton graduated with an honors degree in Philosophical Studies from UCD in 1981, coming first in his class.  He was worked mainly as a gardener since then doing maintenance and landscaping. More recently (2012) he received an honors Bachelor of Divinity degree from the University of London.  He currently reads in the James Joyce library researching a thesis topic on 'Scientific Method as a form of Modal Logic'.  He has had a number of short pieces published…

Alltech Appoints UCD Alumnus Aidan Connolly as CIO

Global animal health and nutrition leader Alltech has appointed vice president Aidan Connolly as Chief Innovation Officer, connected to the company's global research department. Working closely with Dr. Karl Dawson, vice president and Chief Scientific Officer, Connolly will be involved with Alltech's innovation pipeline and lead the commercialization of the company's research programmes. In his new role, Connolly will put together a team within the company's research department that will primarily focus on developing innovative, nutrition-based technologies. UCD’s Crystal Cave by Dr Patrick Roycroft

UCD almost certainly possesses the last great 'unknown' mineral collection left in Ireland. While analogous collections in other colleges and national institutions have been catalogued, UCD's national treasure has remained effectively terra incognita. Thousands of specimens have lain hidden from sight for decades: many are of museum grade, others have great historical significance to Irish science going back to the early 19th century. These minerals, however, are in a sad state of neglect and decay, which prompted the Heritage Council to recently fund a conservation project involving myself (a 1996 PhD geology graduate from UCD), Dr. Matthew Parkes (National Museum of Ireland {NMI}), and Prof. Stephen Daly (UCD School of Geological Sciences) to save the most endangered and most historical…

UCD Boat Club – Crew of 1974

On the 6th of July, the 1974 University College Dublin Boat Club crew that won The Ladies Challenge Plate (a trophy that was presented to the Stewards at Henley by the ladies of Henley in 1943 and the second most prestigious trophy at Henley) will have the honour of rowing over the course at lunch time at finals day, to mark the fortieth anniversary of the occasion. This win in 1974 was a watershed for Irish rowing, an Irish crew had not won at Henley since 1902 and the Ladies Challenge Plate had not been won by an Irish crew since 1875. (more…)
