Mark Rohan Secures Gold

UCD graduate Mark Rohan, BSc in Sport & Exercise Management, secured gold for Ireland in the individual H1 time trial, with a time of 35:41.54 at the London Paralympics 2012. Mark graduated in 2010 from the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Population Science. See RTÉ page for full details.

Kieran McGowan, Kyran McLaughlin and Laurence Crowley in Elan/UCD announcement

The UCD McGowan and McLaughlin post-doctoral scholarships and the Laurence Crowley 'Business of Biotechnology' lecture series are part of Elan's €3.17 million donation to the university to build capacity at the interface between business and science disciplines. A director of Elan, and a director of Charles Schwab Worldwide Funds plc, Kieran McGowan (BComm 1973) was, until May 2012, Chairman of CRH, plc. From 1990 until his retirement in December 1998, he was Chief Executive of the Industrial Development Authority of Ireland. He is a former Chair of the UCD Governing Authority. Dr Sharon Sheehan, the first female Master of the Coombe

The Board of the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital (CWIUH) has announced the election of the Master designate for the hospital for the period 2013-2019, the first female to be elected to the post, and the 30th person to hold the position. Dr Sharon Sheehan graduated from UCD with an honours in medicine in 1998. Full article.

SIFE Ireland announce new appointments for Leo Cullen & Terence O’Rourke

SIFE Ireland (Students in Free Enterprise) announce appointment of Leo Cullen and Terence O'Rourke. Founded in the US in 1975, SIFE is an international, not-for-profit organisation which encourages university students to make a positive difference to their communities, while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders of the future. Leo Cullen graduated from UCD with a BA in 1999. In his role as non-executive director of SIFE Ireland, Leo will be involved in the development and governance of the world's largest university-based partnership between business and higher education for social change as it establishes a network in Ireland for the first time. David Dobbyn BCL 1997 – appointed to Xilinx

David Dobbyn has been appointed to multinational legal role, EMEA Regional Counsel, at Xilinx.‌ The US multinational firm Xilinx, which employs over 250 at the company's European Headquarters in Dublin, has appointed David Dobbyn, as EMEA Regional Counsel. David graduated with a BCL (European) Law Degree from University College Dublin. Martin Curley BE MBS appointed as a Vice President at Intel Corporation

Intel has announced the promotion of Martin Curley, Director, Intel Labs Europe and Senior Principal Engineer, to Vice President of Intel Corporation. ‌Anne Fletcher, MD, Coady Partnership Architects (CPA) and her Practice recently won a major international competition to design 4 new secondary schools in Belgium which has resulted in staff numbers increasing in the Practice by 30%. Anne graduated from UCD with a BArch in 1977.

Helena Nolan BA MA (Creative Writing) wins the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award 2011

‌The winner of the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award for 2011 is Helena Nolan. Kilkenny-born Helena currently lives and works in Dublin, after a number of years abroad in London and Kuala Lumpur. In 2008 she received an MA in Creative Writing from UCD, Helena also holds a BA from UCD.  Her work has been published in journals and anthologies and shortlisted in a range of competitions, including Fish and Strokestown. Last year she was awarded joint second prize in the Patrick Kavanagh Award. She lives in Shankill and is married with two sons. The judge was the poet, novelist and screenwriter Brian Lynch.
