Despite a global pandemic, we made our way back to each other again and, almost 13 years after leaving UCD, have turned that “friendship” into an engagement, the luckiest little family of three and a wonderful life together.

On the third Monday in September 1964, I repeated the Physics Practical in the new lab in Belfield. It was the first day that Belfield opened for student activities and there was major publicity in that evening’s papers. I am very proud that I was one of the first on campus. When I see Belfield now, the developments are massive.

Naoise attended every lecture at UCD with me, every group work meeting and every Zoom lecture. He was warmly welcomed by my UCD lecturers and classmates, which made the experience so enjoyable for us both. We’re both incredibly grateful to Denise McGuinness and her faculty for supporting me to achieve a Professional Certificate in Breastfeeding and Lactation and also for ensuring that access to further education, academia and research is accessible and supported for all breastfeeding mothers.

Róisín placed third in the Maria Edgeworth Poetry Competition, was shortlisted for the Fish Publishing Poetry Prize, awarded a Tyrone Guthrie residency and published two collections of poetry, Infinite Monochrome and Insomnia (both Orphic Press). Memories of UCD: I started the certificate course when I was 26, having had a very difficult time when I was younger attempting to obtain a degree, due to ill health. I loved learning about Irish history in an academic setting, having grown up abroad, but the politics module was where I really found my place. I finished my MA in Creative Writing this year and am hoping to apply for a PhD next year.

Inspired by their success stories, I decided to quit my job to do a PhD at UCD. Upon my graduation, I got a job in Hong Kong. However, a better opportunity popped up in Singapore a year later. Fast forward and now I am in my eighth year with UCD Global Campus, Singapore. I’m grateful to my alma mater for everything. I’m also grateful for my students who teach me how to be better every day!

I enjoyed working as a research assistant and doing my masters thesis. Even with a busy schedule, I used to sit and relax near the James Joyce Library and enjoy the lovely green spaces.

lives in Ireland and is a consulting geophysicist. Professional highlight from the last year: Consulting work with an aristocrat on a major mineral discovery on a big estate. Memories of UCD: The late Des Hally’s lectures were a mini-MBA and his are the only notes I still keep and read over from time to time. Best fun ever was our study group of two women and two men; we had very different skills and optimum diversity in age, gender and competencies. We worked very efficiently as a team.

lives in Italy and teaches English at the Università Popolare di Parma. He has published a book, Quasimodo, with colleagues, and recently The Tolkien Society published one of his watercolours on the front cover of Amon Hen, its magazine. Memories of UCD: The picture shows myself and Susan Grant on the day of our PhD conferral. The picture was taken by Kelly Maxham, a friend and a colleague, who unfortunately passed away a few years ago. Susan was a colleague in the School of History and Archives, where we were both tutors.

I have tried to locate Ailbhe on UCD Connect but our paths have not crossed since 1992.

lives in the UK and is a producer/director at Troy TV. Professional highlight from the last year: I was UK series producer for season one of Welcome To Wrexham, which won five Emmys! Memories of UCD: As a founder member of the Dance Society, I have amazing memories of shows, including the UCD fashion show. I was also co-editor of The College Tribune, great fun. Love on campus: One bitterly cold day in 1995 I ran back from a dance class at the Sports Centre to the Arts Block, only to be pelted by snowballs by a group of guys on the roof of the Science Block. Over a decade later, in Barcelona, I met a hilarious Cork man who turned out to be one of the guys on the roof! We are married with two boys.

Favourite lecturer: Dick Roche on the origins, challenges and aspirations of the European Union are as relevant today as they were in the 1990s. lives in Germany and is an air crew Chief Steward. Favourite lecturers: Deirdre O’Grady and Barry Jones. Memories of UCD: Qualifying for a summer scholarship in Italy; taking part in a play called Die Chinesische Mauer (The Great Wall Of China) by Swiss writer Max Frisch. Love on campus: I found my first true love at UCD but was disappointed not long after. My heart was broken for a long time. As the song by Cat Stevens goes: “the first cut is the deepest”. That certainly rang true back then!

Professional highlight from the last year: Walther Foundation Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Memories of UCD: A class outing: our tutor, who felt we were medical philistines who needed some cultural exposure, hired a bus and took us on a tour of Georgian buildings. The photograph was, I think, taken on the steps of Castletown House. I am at the very back on the right!

Memories of UCD: I wrote poems while at UCD for my soulmate Kate McGarry, a 1972 alumna. I posted them to her but as a form of wooing they were unsuccessful. She strung me along for years but it was worth the wait.

lives in Ireland and retired this year. Favourite lecturers: Pierse Colbert and John Teeling. Memories of UCD: We were one of the first faculties to be based at Belfield. Rugby matches; concerts in the restaurant block; paper airplanes in the Economics lectures of Professor Patrick Lynch, who was a genius but oblivious to the antics of his students! Great memories!

lives in Ireland and after a 42-year career in local government is now a board chairperson. Memories of UCD: Moving to Belfield in 1969 after completing my first year as a night student in Earlsfort Terrace. Belfield was practically a greenfield site then, compared to the marvellous campus it is now.

lives in Ireland and is a retired bank branch manager. Favourite lecturer: Professor John Joe Moore SJ, our Botany and Science lecturer. I remember his very sympathetic treatment of the concept of evolution; a book written at the time by fellow Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, The Phenomenon of Man, was banned by the Church! Memories of UCD: In an age of exorbitant rents, it’s worth recalling how I shared a lovely house in Sandymount, D4 with my brother and sister, costing only £2 each a week!

Love on campus: I met James, my husband of 44 years, an engineer, at UCD.

lives in Ireland and is retired from the bank. Memories of UCD: My fondest memory is of the coffee in the student restaurant. There was a choice – black or white! The white coffee was made with hot milk and served in a green cup and saucer. With two spoons of sugar it was a cup of perfect nectar on a cold morning.

I have been in Australia since 1986 and last year while visiting Dublin I went for a nostalgic trip down memory lane through the corridors of UCD. I cherish my memories. Long cups of coffee in the restaurant with classmates after many hours studying in the library were an intricate part of the university experience.

Memories of UCD: Studying 16 hours a day: coffee for sixpence and milk for four pence! Daily walks to Earlsfort Terrace for Maths and Maths Physics and a good chance of meeting a woman from Arts or Social Science! Incredible camaraderie and friends for life.

lives in Ireland and is a retired public servant. Alumni events attended this year: I always attend class reunions and the UCD Festival. Memories of UCD: Great memories playing rugby. On the third Monday in September 1964, I repeated the Physics Practical in the new lab in Belfield. It was the first day that Belfield opened for student activities and there was major publicity in that evening’s papers. I am very proud that I was one of the first on campus. When I see Belfield now, the developments are massive.

lives in Ireland and is retired as a lecturer in computer science, following roles in several US companies. Memories of UCD: L&H debates; Emmet Spiceland’s wonderful music on campus; golf outings with the “Wedges” and winning the President’s Prize in 1967; rousing singsongs after Mountaineering Club outings in Wicklow; on stage and on tour with An Cumann Drámaíochta.
