Memories of UCD: My most vivid memory is of something that would never be allowed today – a stretcher race as part of Engineering rag-week. A race between ten pubs around the centre of Dublin; in each pub you got a clue to the next one. Teams of five – four carriers who had to drink half a pint in each pub, and one on the stretcher who had to drink a pint in each pub. It is not that there were not things to protest about, such as the situation in the North, but the move to Belfield?

SHRINWANTI MISTRI
MSc International Relations 2020

lives in Ireland and is an Officer of Statistics at the Central Statistics Office. Memories of UCD: I was a first year student of Physics and Mathematics, pacing up and down while studying in the kitchen of a friend’s flat in UCD’s Merville, when quite amazingly and literally a lightbulb fell on my head. Nine years later, on a working holiday in Spain, I was Googling my birthday and found that I was born on “Old Christmas Day” (4 January) which was Sir Isaac Newton’s birthday. Quite a coincidence! At UCD, I fell in love with the idea of learning more languages to communicate with more people!

KHALED AHMED SELLOW

DENIS O’SULLIVAN
BE Chemical Engineering 1986

lives in Belgium and is Chief Technology Officer at Consultant Immaterial Ltd. I think our team finished in less than two hours and we didn’t make the top three.

Memories of UCD: The 1969 occupation of the University. Students at The University of California, Berkeley, had a genuine grievance about the war in Vietnam and social unrest, but these students in UCD were rebels without a cause with little to do. It is not that there were not things to protest about, such as the situation in the North, but the move to Belfield?

MARY O’FARRELL
BA 1973

Memories of UCD: Treasured memories of our Irish lecturer, Dr Brendán O Madagáin, and his cultural interests which he shared in his free time with us students. Memories of UCD: I recall with gratitude Professor DK O’Donovan, Dean of Medicine, when I sat my finals. In 1975, results were called out by a Porter: “Pass, Honours or Reject” in front of the whole class. The previous day, DK had asked me to come to his office. I thought he must want me to be his intern; I sailed in breezily. He looked at me with kindness and said: “You don’t know, do you?” I had failed Medicine. He was so kind and hugged me as I cried. Thanks to him, I was prepared when the Porter called out “Pauline Cushman – Reject.” I passed at Christmas!

At a celebration to mark the ten years, a former student, who had done very well, threw his arms around me and said: “Professor Harmey, you changed my life and that of my children.” I remember it with pride.

JUDGE PATRICK J. MC MAHON

lives in the US and is a retired Judge. He lectures and is an examiner in The Law Society. He is on the board of the Adoption Authority of Ireland. Memories of UCD: I was in Earlsfort Terrace and had digs at 38 Lower Leeson Street. We had all the dances – the Ags (Agricultural Science), Yerrawadies (Engineering), Sivilkems (Science) and others, most held in the Olympia ballroom off Camden Street. Love on Campus: I met my magnificent wife at the Sivilkems dance in The Crystal Ballroom in 1972 and we are a very happy pair, married for 54 years, with four children and 11 grandchildren.

ROSARY COX

Favourite moment: During second year exams, the invigilator said “Second year BCL students, there is a mistake in question 2, subsection A” and the voice behind me said: “As far as I’m concerned the whole paper is a mistake!”

ANN RYDER BYRNE
BSocSc 1969, DipAppSS 1974

lives in Ireland, a former Principal Social Worker, she is retired. Memories of UCD: One day in 1968, sociologist Dr Conor Ward sent the whole class out to observe people for an hour. I went to St Stephen’s Green. At the time I really wondered why. After 44 years working, I now know how non-verbal communication and observation is critical in social work as many people can’t express their difficulties.
