My three years there as a student seemed inevitable. UCD was, and remains, an outstanding institution of the highest calibre. The Quinn School has clearly elevated the undergraduate Business programme to a new level for the 21st century.

This year he was project director for Manhattan Loft Corporation, overseeing the delivery of the new 42-storey Manhattan Loft Gardens development in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London.The double-cantilevered tower was designed by SOM, the architects of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and One World Trade Centre in Manhattan.

In the 1980s, the Library closed at 10pm and on Saturdays at 1pm. Now it seems to open 24/7. The Law Library and Miss Semple, the boss, a sweet, dedicated librarian who resembled Miss Marple and found everything for us.

Memories of UCD: Walking into Earlsfort Terrace late for my first lecture and being stunned at all the males in attendance (I didn’t notice the other eight females). I went to all-girls primary and secondary schools and nobody told me engineering was (at that time) a largely male profession.

This year he was involved with the restoration of the Allerton Oak, a 1,200-year-old ancient tree in Calderstones Park in Liverpool. Memories of UCD: Meeting my wife Marguerite in 1975. She joined the zoology department in January and we were married in August. We were together for 43 years until she sadly passed away in 2018.

Memories of UCD: The occupation of UCD’s Albert College in Glasnevin to force the reduction of lectures per week from 38 to 28, the excellent professors, lecturers and technical staff, the wide range of subjects, the long summer holidays for working abroad in horticulture.

And of course, people throwing cream pies during Rag Week was entertaining to watch.

He was recently awarded the Governor General of Canada Sovereign Medal for Volunteers, which recognises those who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad. Memories of UCD: Playing double-bass in the 1969 UCD orchestra performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto #3 at Newman House. A memorable experience.

Pat Norris

(BSc 1963, MSc 1964) worked in the space and software industries from the 1960s until retirement in 2018. He received the Apollo Individual Achievement Award from Neil Armstrong in 1969 for his work with NASA. His book, Return to the Moon After Apollo coincides with this year’s 50th anniversary of Apollo 11.

John (Ivan) Woods

(MB BCh BAO 1961) lives in Canada where he is Professor of Neurology at the Neurological Institute at McGill University.

With the help of Jet Propulsion Lab in California, he developed a trasmitter and receiver from astronauts’ helmets and adapted this for use in a hospital, now in routine use in neurology departments. Memories of UCD: In 1961, I won a gold medal for medicine and had the highest mark in the BCh exam.
