I went to St Stephen’s Green. At the time I really wondered why. After 44 years working, I now know how non-verbal communication and observation is critical in social work as many people can’t express their difficulties.

Memories of UCD: Chatting with Gerald Foye in Earlsfort Terrace and asking him for the address of a cute OB nurse I met at St Clare Hospital in NYC while Gerry and I were doing externships in the summer of 1962. The nurse was Madeline Connell and we were married in September 1964 and are still married 60+ years later.

John attended the Engineering 55th class reunion in September 2021 and a pre-match lunch hosted by UCD Rugby Club for the All-Ireland League match against Garryowen in April 2022. Memories of UCD: On the third Monday in September 1964, I was among the first groups of students who moved to Belfield. There was a big article in the Evening Press that evening. I was also on the Freshman rugby team that won the Leinster Minor cup in 1963.

Memories of UCD: I was in Earlsfort Terrace and had digs at 38 Lower Leeson Street. We had all the dances – the Ags (Agricultural Science), Yerrawadies (Engineering), Sivilkems (Science) and others, most held in the Olympia ballroom off Camden Street. Love on Campus: I met my magnificent wife at the Sivilkems dance in The Crystal Ballroom in 1972 and we are a very happy pair, married for 54 years, with four children and 11 grandchildren.
