UCD AFC secured its spot in the Premier Division in late November, overcoming Waterford in a promotion-relegation match. The students secured a 2-1 win over the Munster side with goals courtesy of two players, Dara Keane and Colm Whelan, signed from Waterford’s own academy. UCD began its top-flight campaign in February this year and it was always going to be a step up in quality for the team. Currently at the time of writing, they have 10 points from their opening 18 games.
UCD AFC’s Colm Whelan and Liam Kerrigan were both capped at Ireland U21 level after their impressive form throughout the First Division campaign.
UCD AFC were crowned the Irish Universities Collingwood Cup winners in April of this year, overcoming Queen’s University Belfast with a 2-1 victory. Featuring university teams from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the Collingwood Cup is the oldest surviving all-Ireland association football competition. UCD were two goals up at half time but had to sustain a lot of pressure late in the game when they were reduced to 10 men after a red card. It was the 48th time UCD had won the competition.
