Actor, writer and director Gabriel Byrne has been named the recipient of the 2023 TK Whitaker Award at the Business & Finance Awards for his outstanding contribution and impact across the arts. The award was first established in 2016 and goes to those who have demonstrated a significant contribution to public service. Past recipients include former Taoiseach Enda Kenny, former President of Ireland Mary McAleese and President Michael D. Higgins.

One of the theatrical highlights of the past year was the all-day, three-show Druid/O’Casey play-cycle of Sean O’Casey’s Dublin trilogy: The Plough and the Stars about 1916; The Shadow of a Gunman about the War of Independence; and Juno and the Paycock about the Civil War. As Minnie Powell in Shadow, Caitríona Ennis garnered rave reviews. The plays were staged in Galway, Belfast and Dublin, before being taken to the US
