In June 2019, Professor Stephen O’Rahilly won the Banting Prize, the American Diabetes Association’s highest honour, for his work on the causes of obesity and Type 2 diabetes – including discovering the obesity gene that affects children and identifying numerous genes important in metabolic function and dysfunction. He was previously awarded the Ulysses Medal from UCD, the highest honour the University can bestow.
Professor John Boland was awarded Science Foundation Ireland Researcher of the Year 2018. The award recognises a significant contribution to the Irish research community in the year of the award and over the winner’s entire career. Professor Boland, a nanoscale materials and systems expert, was given the award for a new insight into the building blocks of copper. Professor Boland is also Ireland’s first Advanced ERC grant awardee in the physical sciences.
