SAILING

UCD Sailing made history by winning the British Intervarsities Team Racing Championship in April, commonly known as the BUSA Finals.

This achievement marks the first time since 1970 that an Irish team has won the title. Moreover, the team’s triumph at the BUSA Finals came just a month after they made another groundbreaking win as the first Irish team to claim victory in the renowned Oxford Top Gun Invitational Regatta. It is customary for the leading Irish team to be invited to compete in the BUSA Finals. This year, the event was hosted by Cambridge University and took place on Grafham Water from April 12-14. Having won most of the Irish university events this year along with Top Gun, the UCD team was selected as the Irish team to take on the BUSA. The victorious team included Jack Fahy (captain), Liam Glynn, Tom Higgins, Triona Hinkson, Kathy Kelly and Cian Lynch.

Elite Sports Scholar Eve McMahon was named ‘Irish Sailor of the Year’ for 2022. In 2022, Eve retained her world title as she won gold at the ILCA6 Youth World Championships in Houston, Texas. The victory added to the golds she won at the Allianz Youth Sailing World Championships in the Netherlands and at the European Youth ILCA6 Championship in Greece in July. The Elite Sports Scholar was also nominated for the 2022 RTÉ Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year award.
