ENDURING LEGACY: UCD ALUMNI IN BLOOM
Just as Leopold Bloom strolled through Dublin, alumni and friends strolled through Belfield campus in June for UCD Alumni in Bloom, a celebration of the arts, music, film, and Joycean heritage of UCD. James Joyce graduated from UCD with a BA in 1902, and his lasting legacy in UCD and beyond was honoured with screenings of In Time: Dónal Lunny, spoken word performances of Ulysses, and an exhibition of Joycean artefacts from UCD Special Collections. The Alumni Orchestra, conducted by Associate Professor Ciarán Crilly, brought together 65 members of our alumni community from across all faculties and disciplines, united by music.
In Time: Dónal Lunny, produced by South Wind Blows in association with UCD, was introduced by the film’s Executive Producer, Professor P.J. Mathews, relaying the impact of Dónal’s teaching on traditional music students. A first edition of Ulysses was on display with UCD Special Collections, which also houses letters between Joyce and Sylvia Beach, as well as photos from his student days.
